You have started a wedding photography business. Do you know what you have gotten yourself into?
Weddings are romantic. Weddings are beautiful. Weddings are times when families unite in boundless love.
Sounds rather fabulous doesn’t it. Who wouldn’t want to be involved in an event like that?
What about the stress? What about the once in a lifetime opportunity to get that shot? What about the expectations? What about taxes and regulations?
Now let me tell you as one wedding photographer to another, I think it is worth it. There is romance. There is family unity. They are beautiful. Don’t ever forget that when you are out on the job. Even a simple low-budget wedding can be beautiful if you look.
Ok there is stress. Both for you and your client. Its a big day for them and they wont be having a second go at it. So it behoves you to bring your best. Be prepared. Have back up gear on you. Don’t leave it at home or worse still believe it wont happen to you. It will one day. Will you be prepared? Your clients will expect you to cope with problems and still deliver. Be ready for anything. Have your eyes open and don’t get distracted. pounce on those moments with your camera at the ready. Your client will love you for it.
Now the business stuff. Check out the Australian Tax Office site, www.business.gov.au, your state business registration site and www.asic.gov.au. These sites will provide you with all the essential information that you will need to start and continue to run a business.
So you have your business going. You are running it by yourself and you aren’t a super genius (who is?). Some things we can’t do ourselves. It may be we don’t have the skills. It may be we don’t have the time. This is where it is time to look for someone to help share the load. Service providers are everywhere. There will be some that will suit your needs and become part of your team. Accountants, printers, album manufacturers, advertisers to name a few will supplement your business in areas you are unable/don’t want to work. Use these people to maximse your time at the things you love and enjoy in your business. That will in turn cause your business to blossom.
We would hope that we can become part of your team and bring you albums that will impress your most fussy of clients.
